How can I turn off the Automatic Update feature in in Windows XP and Windows Server 2003?

To turn off the Automatic Update feature in Windows XP and Windows Server 2003 do the following:

  1. Go to Control Panel.

  2. Click System.

  3. Go to the Automatic Updates tab.

  4. Un-select the "Keep my computer up to date" box.

  1. Click Ok.

BTW, next time you need to open the System applet you can do so much faster: instead of clicking your way to the System icon, you can just right click My Computer and choose Properties, or even better - press the Windows Logo key on your keyboard and then press Pause/Break at the same time.
