The errors on my primary DC shows multiple event ID 672 errors by the new DC I setup trying to connect. What causes this error and how can I allow it to replicate? Is this a trust issue between the servers?

Hello

I recently had an issue with a remote dc running on Windows 2003 Server R2 which had become tombstoned and needed to be demoted. Unfortunately due to the tombstone issue, the system would only be demoted via the /force command. The system seemed to handle the demotion fine and asked for a local user admin account password. Unfortunately when the system comes up now, the password will not work and domain accounts do not seem to be able to log into the system either.

As a side note, the system's share is still available and functioning as it should, however any other type of access is not possible. I am planning to use a cracking disk to see if I can reset the admin password, but am concerned that there may be issues - any ideas on what I may need to be prepared for?

Thanks

I also had several Netlogon errors yesterday

The dynamic registration of the DNS record '1a9534c7-814f-47ef-a570-9fe42150192e._msdcs.prairiefarm.k12.wi.us. 600 IN CNAME dc1.prairiefarm.k12.wi.us.' failed on the following DNS server:

Backstory:

I'll try to make this short, and you guys can tell me what's relevant and if you need any more info.

Originally, there were 2 domain controllers, the first running 2003 Std, the second 2003 R2 Std.

2 weeks ago I had to replace a drive in a degraded RAID 5 array in the first domain controller. The last I had seen by checking the array manager was that the array was still rebuilding. One morning after this (don't know if the array ever finished rebuilding or not) CHKDSK was running and finding tons and tons of corrupt files. That server's C drive is completely corrupt and unreadable. There is no backup of the system state, I was trying to get the customer to buy a real backup solution but he was just using SyncBack to backup his files.

Anyway, I spent the day there trying to get the second domain controller working. At first I was getting errors trying to seize the FSMO roles, but I eventually got all 5 to seize successfully.

Even after that, AD was still messed up, the Exchange server wouldn't do anything, etc. Running dcdiag showed several failures, including failing the fsmo role check.

I found an article on stopping file replication service, setting a registry key called Burflags to value D4, and restarting file replication service.

This got AD happy enough so that the Exchange server is working.

However, dcdiag still fails the netlogon test as stated above.

I cannot even find a netlogon folder in the filesystem. Luckily, this customer isn't using group policy, so as far as he's concerned, it's all fixed. But I don't like an unhealthy AD.

This server is now the only domain controller. What do I do next? Thanks in advance.

Question: What causes diskpart not to be able to extend a volume?

This is a virtual system (VMWare) on a LUN that had a spare 70GB spec so I used that to extend a non-OS, non-paging drive (using VMWare ViClient).

In the OS it's one drive per LUN, there are no other partitions on the disk (just drive E: and 70GB spare). The OS can see the spare 70GB at the [apparent] end of the LUN.

I wonder if this has something to do with permissions because, if I right-click any of the drives the format option is greyed out ... I've checked on other systems and sometimes that option is available, sometimes it's not ... my user is a member of local administrators.

I've looked around on Google and the only real solutions appear to be third party applications ... I'd prefer not to go that route. Does anyone have any ideas why this happens?

I'm about to try booting from a Win ERD CD to see if that allows me to do it.

Hi,
Our company was recently taken over and I'm looking into the best way to migrate users from our old domain into the new corporate one. They're willing to provide domain trust as long as I give a plan for total migration with a reasonable timescale.

For the most part, this seems fairly easy (I've done a domain migration before), but I have no experience in migrating clients on Windows 7. Last time, it was all XP and from a 2000 to a 2003 domain, using the Security Translation Wizard in the AD Migration Tool. This time, it's 2003 to 2003 (I know!), but 80% of the clients are now on Windows 7.

I don't yet have the ability to test the tool... does it work the same way, or is there a newer tool for migrating Windows 7? Most of the things I've found on Google assume that I'm either on or moving to a Server 2008 (or later) domain.

Thanks! :)
