Hi All,

I have been trying to get to the bottom of sysprep and vSphere's Guest Customization wizard. I am aware that VMware uses's Microsoft's sysprep tool to perform the customization of the guest OS. As you know, there are things that sysprep /generalize does besides reset the SID. For instance, sysprep changes the CMID (client machine ID), which KMS uses to uniquely identify OS's.

I want to confirm if the checkbox in vSphere's Guest Customization wizard, "Generate New Security ID" is the same as "sysprep /generalize." For example, if I run the guest customization wizard and don't check "Generate New Security ID," what items have been reset? It seems to me that I have created an answer file and potentially reset the licensing, computer name, and networking. But has the CMID been reset? What about the nebulous list of "other" things that sysprep /generalize resets? What in the Guest Customization wizard controls those things?

Also, if anyone has a reliable source for a list of everything that sysprep /generalize does/resets, I would love to have that information. Even Microsoft's site finishes their list with phrases like, "among other things." I want to know exactly the things that sysprep generalize resets and not guess. I have spent a lot of time searching and am not getting definite answers.

Thanks in advance for any knowledge you can provide!

Richard

I am trying to copy 5 virtual machines(includes 2 domain controllers) in a working lab environmnet to another new server/host I have setup on a different vlan. I started off by clicking browse the datastore on the original server with esxi and copied each folder for each virtual machines to a external hard drive, then I copied those same backed up virtual machines to the next servers datastore. I then added each virtual machine to the inventory by right clicking the .vmx file on each virtual machine folder. I powered on the machines and they cannot ping each other, but the issue I'm running into is the 2 domain controllers are not talking to each other either, I can log into each domain controller invidually only. As an example, domain controller1(winner.com), i can log onto the domain, and domain controller 2(second.winer.com) I can log onto that domain also. So bottom line all 5 virtual machines cannot ping each other. Am I missing a step? Any suggestions would be helpful.

Everytime I create a vm clone or create a vm from a template the vm does not boot and gets stuck on the PXE boot screen. I put the hard disk at startup that does not help. The error I get after PXE aborts is no OS installed?
Anyone know what is going on?
Thanks Jim
