We have a customer that we are building a server for. Its going to be Hyper V host with two guests. Due to the costs we hvae 4 600GB SAS disks.

Initially I was looking at a RAID1 for each guest, however long term it doesnt really lend itself if we want to add a 3 guest. However as one of the guests will manage Exchange I am looking for the best performance.

Plus I realise that Hyper V doesnt leave a huge footprint, is it wise to have this installed on the same set of disks as a guest ?

Any advice would be great or links.

I confgiured them as failover cluster and there are 2 Luns in the shared storage,
1. Quorum
2. OS's Lun (The Lun to save all virtual machines OS's VHD).

I tryed to live migrate one of my machines and it worked great!
The problem starts when I add another Lun.

Let's say I have a Lun which is Connected to both Host's via iSCSI.
I add to the virtual machine another Disk and directed the VHD to that Lun.
That Lun is not in the shared storage and it is visible by both Hosts (and configured in both hosts as a simple volume).

The Live migration now failes.
Should this Lun also be in the shared storage in order to live migrate? (Or even quick migrate, or any migrate at all..)?

Does it matter that in HostA the Lun is visible as "G:\" and int HostB it is "I:\"??

So, I attached the disk to Disk Management in the 2012 host OS and converted to GPT. Perfect, except that when I install the OS, it converts it back to MBR,... I have a 3TB drive that I want to use as a single partition in a 2008 R2 VM. So, I attached the disk to Disk Management in the 2012 host OS and converted to GPT. Perfect, except that when I install the OS, it converts it back to MBR, and back to 2TB max. BTW, in the 2012 host, the volume shows as GPT. It's just the stupid guest that I can't figure out. Lots of google hits, but they all say the same thing: delete all partitions, right-click, and convert. Yeah, I get it. I just can't make it stay that way through the install. Am I missing something really obvious and stupid? Probably.

I have no problem blowing the machine away and starting over.

Any help gets my eternal gratitude!

VMM is 2012 and running SCVMM 2012 SP1. When adding hyper V hosts the vmm service crashes, after awhile it restarts and the host is listed in the fabric but you can't do anything with it. On my 2008r2 server I have a drive set aside for VMs (D:) . Should I enable Shadow Copies for this drive?

I know you need to run the VSS "fixit" to enable VSS on a guest to run backups - but I'm not referring to that - just the idea of running Shadow Copies on a drive like you would on a drive that holds other types of files.
