I work for a school district and we deploy all of our printers via Group Policy Preferences. We use Windows Server 2008 R2 and Server 2012. This setup works fantastically for all of our Windows 7 machines. We filter who gets the printers via Item-Level Targeting and use IP range. We are attempting to move over to Windows 8 to better suit our touchscreen labs. However, I cannot get the printers to work. I have tried troubleshooting and limited the issue to Item-Level Targeting. When this feature is on they will not install the printers or even give an error log with reporting turned on (almost like it doesn't apply to the computer at all). With this feature turned off the printers install fine. I have tried different point and print restrictions as well as changing \\server\printer to \\server.domain.com\printer and this does not seem to matter. As I said it does work will all windows 7 clients. It also works from the Print Management MMC. Thanks in advance for the help! Chris

A slightly unusual query, and one I have :google:d for without success.

I have a fleet of laptops used for delivering MCT courses, with Server 2008R2 installed on them (most courses run under HyperV now)

I would quite like to upgrade them to Windows 8 Pro (mainly to take advantage of hibernation, which is not compatible with 2008R2 HyperV).

Clearly I could nuke them (and will if there aren't any better solutions) but I would prefer to preserve the existing set of VMs, as well as avoiding hunting for drivers etc. Is there any way of fooling the Win 8 installer into thinking the OS is Win7 rather than Server 2008R2 as (fairly obviously) it won't let me do an upgrade install from Server to Desktop.

All thoughts gratefully appreciated

Hi,

I installed Windows 8 around 10 days ago and it was fine (once I'd customised it to avoid Metro in most circumstances) and it boots incredibly fast to logon ... once I log on it takes 25 to 40 seconds to load the RainMeter desktop. It didn't take that long when I installed and configured the desktop so something else, (presumably something I have installed or has updated since then) is slowing things down.

My main applications that I know of that run at startup are rocketdock, SpybotSD Tea Timer, Paintshop Pro XI, ClamWin and MS Office 2013. There are others like nVidia and Intel graphics (I use both), printer drivers, a few apps and stuff but, using AutoRuns, I have progressively switch most of these off with no real benefit. I've checked to see run speeds of things like "RainMeter" by disabling auto run and running manually ... they run in seconds. I can't see anything in the event logs to indicate something taking a long time to run but that doesn't prove anything ... the nVidia tray icon for example doesn't seem to be in the startup folder (of the start menu), in the registry under "run" (both of them) and I can't see them under the "logon" tab of autoruns so ... IOW I'm not quite how it runs or how to stop it to see if that's the issue.

How do I go about finding out what it is that's delaying things running post logon?

Two virtual machines are seen to be running, an external adapter was created and when the option to install the OS the physical drive was selected.
In the Hyper V manager the effort to launch the connect button sometimes leads to the window with the Hyper V logo and sometimes not. Also when the adapter was created a window showed the attempt to resolve the DHCP but does not complete.
