Hello All,
I am running vmware vmserver on a really powerful machine and connected to the host is a SCSI backup tape drive. I have two VMs on the host and I'd like to access the SCSI backup tape drive from the one of these VMs. Does anyone know how I map the SCSI device so it shows up in device manager so the hardware pops up, "found new hardware"?

actually you can back the vmdk files directly using tar or cpio
http://www.vmware.com/support/pubs/v...i_pubs_35.html this is the docs page. look for backup guide using RDM also make sure the HBA is in the list for recognised devices ________ Honda cbr900rr Last edited by DYasny; 6th March 2011 at 20:18.. |

This is for GSX, but it applies here.
http://www.vmware.com/support/gsx3/d...i_win_gsx.html "You added a generic SCSI device to the virtual machine's configuration file (.vmx) as instructed in step 3, but GSX Server does not recognize the device in the Add Hardware Wizard. You may experience this issue with tape drives and tape changers. In this case, look for the line in the configuration file that looks like: scsiZ:Y.fileName = "scsiX:Y" Change the line to: scsiZ:Y.fileName = "<deviceName>" Example device names include Tape0 and Changer0" Here is an example of what the important section of your .vmx config might look like: scsi1.present = "TRUE" scsi1:0.present = "TRUE" scsi1:0.deviceType = "scsi-passthru" scsi1:0.fileName = "Tape0" scsi1.virtualDev = "buslogic"
