Got me an interesting problem here. I am attempting to download a fairly large number of files using a Peer-2-Peer bit-torrent sharing program known as Rufus. The problem is that some the files I am downloading have been broken into 80 or more .rar files... after I start 6 or 7 downloads (seems to be around 500 files), it starts giving me a "trouble accessing files - [Errno 24] Too many open files" error and refusing to start anymore downloads until I've finished 1 or more.

Any idea's? Is there a way to increase the number of files that can be open at one time? Is it a limitation imposed by my WinXp Pro SP1 OS or is it the Rufus program?

p.s I'm running on a P4 2.6Ghz w/2gig of Ram

i don't know the program, but i still refuses to help with any filesharing programs. in my oppinion, there allow you to download illegal files, which isn't allowed.

Really Dumber? Illegal files you say? All P2P programs exist just for that reason? What about ftp programs? Shall we not help anybody with those? How about HTTP programs? People might use them to browse to illegal files! Wow.. maybe it would be better if you just resisted the impulse to help anybody with anything ever again.. wouldn't want to take the risk eh?

The intention of P2P programs is in my oppion sharing files with illegal contents. just tell me, what are you downloading then? problably not something which is freeware, but something you exually need to pay for.

FTP is usally setup for uploading, downloading files for example to of from you're website. Normally, you need a user/pass before you can access that content. The one who owns the FTP site, can control which data is available. If he is sharing illegal contents, he's the one who can have problems.

The reference implementation of BitTorrent keeps all the files being downloaded open. This can cause trouble with some of the larger multi-file torrents, which can have hundreds or thousands of component files. When the number exceeds the OS limit, the OS refuses to allow them all to be opened, preventing BitTorrent from accessing them.

To solve this problem, either increase the OS limit (ulimit, /proc/sys/fs/file-max), or use an implemention that limits the number of files it has open at any one time.
