Question Redundant DNS Entries?
I've tried to ping our domain name (let's say abc.com.au) from the 192.168.10.12 server, and it is trying to reach an old server IP Address that was retired from the network, 192.168.10.13.

When I look in DNS FLZ under abc.com.au it lists:
(same as parent folder) Host (A) 169.254.6.21
(same as parent folder) Host (A) 169.254.206.10
(same as parent folder) Host (A) 192.168.10.12
(same as parent folder) Host (A) 192.168.10.13
(same as parent folder) Host (A) 192.168.10.15

The current DCs are 192.168.10.12 & 192.168.10.15.

1. Can I delete the 169.254.6.21, 169.254.206.10 IP addresses? I'm assuming DNS doesn't have these MS IPs for a particular purpose, but was probably left over from the initial build of the DNS Server before IPs were assigned? Would that assumption be right? If I ping them I get "Request timed out".
(The 1st IP addresses occurs elsewhere as well, I've included details below)

2. Can I delete the 192.168.10.13 IP address? will this then cause any pings to the abc.com.au domain to look up the address from DNS again and ping one of the correct DCs?

I can also find one of these entries in other locations:
FLZ - abc.com.au - _msdcs - gc:
- 169.254.6.21 (as well as the 2 actual DCs)
FLZ - abc.com.au - DomainDNSZones:
- 169.254.6.21 (as well as the 2 actual DCs)
FLZ - abc.com.au - ForestDNSZones:
- 169.254.6.21 (as well as the 2 actual DCs)

Enable scavenging; let the DNS service handle deletion of old records before deleting anything manually.

Thanks for your reply , I've been debating as to how safe Scavenging is as I've not run it before.

Does it just remove old entries?

How does it deal with manually added DNS entries? Even if they're not used or old.

Static or manual created records are not deleted.

What are your recommendations for "refresh" and "no-refresh" intervals? The default is 7 days for both.

Sounds reasonable, depending how many clients join / leave your network

I would try it for a while and see if you need to reduce it
