I understand from an article of MS Technet (see: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/l...=ws.10%29.aspx), that a DHCP server never assigns the first 16 IP addresses in the iPv4 range in a VLAN, as they are reserved. The first two make sense to me (x.x.x.0 and x.x.x.1). And what about x.x.x.255?
What is the reason for keeping these reserved? Please advise. |

This is specific to Virtual Server so I suspect there is no reason apart from MS wanting to keep some IPs free

Why microsoft create such reservations I don't know yet, there are 2 addresses reserved anyhow, and that is a) network address and b) broadcast address.
Secondly 1 address is used for a gateway device. Basically there are per vlan 3 addresses used within each new VLAN.
