I am not sure if anyone is able to help or if it is the right forum, but has anyone had an issue where the wrong MX record is used?
We have two MX records. One has a value of 10 and one has a value of 20. All emails come in to the 10 record, or lower value. One domain though is getting bounces, and the bounce shows that its trying to use our backup MX record, that does not have sendmail running on it. Anyone know why a certain domain could use the wrong MX record, even though there is a lower value for the other MX record? Anyone seen this before? DNS issues on their side, presumably
I suspect there is nothing you can do except pass your evidence on to their IT guru

A couple of things I can think of would be either a connection has failed to be established or the TTL value on the old MX record has been setup wrong and it is still cached on the sending email server's DNS server.
Can you PM me the domain name if you don't want it to be public?

RFC 5321 States:
When the lookup succeeds, the mapping can result in a list of alternative delivery addresses rather than a single address, because of multiple MX records, multihoming, or both. To provide reliable mail transmission, the SMTP client MUST be able to try (and retry) each of the relevant addresses in this list in order, until a delivery attempt succeeds. However, there MAY also be a configurable limit on the number of alternate addresses that can be tried. In any case, the SMTP client SHOULD try at least two addresses. So it could be the case that the sending MTA is attempting to connect to your "primary" MX, is failing, and is then connecting to your "secondary" MX. |

Can also be a spammer. They tend to use the higher cost MX record for UCE.

I am going to contact the administrator on their side to see if they can resolve proper MX records. I will post solution. Thanks for everything so far!

it was looking like the emails actually came in when we were testing our fail over so that would make sense. Did not happen to notice the time on the email at first.

on a side note.. might it be worthwhile to make sure Sendmail is running on your 2MX ?

Does the lower cost MX Record have a typo in it by any chance? (Assuming I am actually understanding the problem)
