Default SBS 2003 won't boot. Black Screen after Bios
Hello

I restarted a customers server this afternoon which is a HP ML 110 G5.
It goes through post fine saying all raid 1 drive are Optimal. I can see all hard drives in Bios.
Straight after Bios when it should get the server 2003 logo i just get a black screen and no hard disk lights at all.

Does this sound like Motherboard or Bios battery problems.
I will have to call HP tomorrow to discuss.

Do you have a USB drive plugged in to the server? Seen that before on an ML110, even if you've turned off USB boot in the BIOS.

All USB drives are out.
I have had that before but it normally says something on the screen like cant boot from disk....
I just get a black screen.
I checked bios boot order and its all correct.

Wrong screen resolution?

(Anyway, can you try F8 during boot and see if you can get into safe mode)

Nightmare! Last time this happened to me it was because the RAID controller had gone.
HP support will ask you to boot with minimum RAM installed etc and probably talk you through the disaster recovery boot by flipping the DIPP switches over.
You could try booting from a smartstart CD and see what happens.

yep - boot off a recovery cd and check the disks
I've seen a HP server do the same thing with an external usb drive - just sits there doing nothing, not saying can't boot, just doing nothing..

so yea.. i'd suggest trying to boot off another cd, and qualify the drive integrity is ok

Will it boot from CD to test?
As you're speaking to HP then they will be able to give the best support but if not then opening the case and checking seating etc is good.
Don't know the bios on one of these but some show a log which may be worth looking at.
Checking each HDD connection is worth it too (powered off).

From the black screen try CTL+ALT+F1 This has worked for me when the screen resolution has been wrong
