Default Direct Access

Is it true that direct access is within 2012 and TMG is not needed anymore.

TMG was never needed and indeed TMG does not support DA as it doesn't support IPv6. UAG on the other hand does both natively.

It was possible in 2008 R2 to setup Direct Access without UAG, although it wasn't easy. It's much easier now in 2012 by all accounts, although I haven't looked into it personally.

Originally, DA was part of the Windows 2008 R2 operating system, and you could configure it directly, if you knew how (it wasn't easy). Then, UAG came along, and made it easier. Then, with Windows 2012, UAG is not needed anymore and anyone who has the server product can depoly it.

If you're interested, I just published a book about it, which covers everything. You can find it on the publishers website Packet, or via any search engine.
