Default Exchange 2003 backups on a 2008 server

OK, I found an older thread concerning installing ESM for an Exchange 2003 environment on a 2008 server, but it was locked. After reading that thread, it was concluded that there was no supported ESM setup for this situation, and I was wondering if that's still the case.

The reason for this is for backup purposes. In order to use the GRT of Backup Exec 2010 R2, it's recommended that you have ESM installed on your backup server, which I found to be the case after a lot of failed e-mail backups. Well, our new backup server is running 2008 R2 and I've yet to see a successful full backup of Exchange on this server. Is this a lost cause or does anyone know of a workaround?

Personally I wouldn't bother with the GRT backup, I'd just backup the information store. Configure your Exchange retention policies accordingly for recovering any deleted mails and it'll be much less hassle and shorten your backup times.
