Default Shrink database sql 2008

Hi,
We have a database that is very large. We have done some cleaning operations in this database and removed some old data that is not needed anymore. So i just wonder if it would be time to use the function shrink database to free up diskspace?
Can this be done without to take the database offline? Has someone done this? Should i use the shrink database only, or also use the shrink files?

Lots of information online (e.g. http://www.straightpathsql.com/archi...shrink-button/) but IMHO, unless you are running out of space on the drive, leave the db file and let natural growth use up the free space
