Well i finally did bite the bullet and bought a new laptop with Windows 8 on it.
Was seriously tempted to remove it and install Windows 7 but i thought i'd give 8 a whirl and see how i went. Observations for the past week. Most applications that i've installed have added a tile to the "Metro" interface. Good news for me. You need to go back and start learning all your Windows Shortcuts again. No access to Run for instance. I still consistently work in desktop mode rather than "Metro" mode. Probably just a user thing and something i feel comfortable with. |

for RUN, hover the mouse in the bottom left corner (magic pixel) of the desktop, wait till the mini metro display pops up and Right Click for all admin options
Also works by right clicking in bottom left of TIFKAM screen

Some more shortcuts
1.Windows K Devices shows connected devices. This is where you can configure multiple displays. 2.Windows , (that's a comma) provides a temporary peek at the desktop, like Windows 7 Aero. 3.Windows D goes to the desktop (nice). 4.Windows F Search is much easier than that cumbersome Windows Start button and a single click. 5.Windows PgUp moves the start screen to the left monitor. PgDn moves it to the right monitor 6. Windows C opens the "Charms bar". Here you have Search, Share, Start, Devices and Settings. You can also get to these by hovering over the small Minimize icon in the lower right of the screen. Handy if you can't remember the Windows key shortcuts. 7.Windows J switches focus among apps. 8.Windows R is Run. 9.Windows Q will search charms. 10.Windows E opens Windows Explorer. 11.Windows Break displays system properties. Windows + x gives the "admin" menu, same menu as Ossian mentioned a few posts back.
I'm growing to like Windows 8 actually, I was at a Microsoft Tech Days event last week and picked up some useful tips. There are lots of great recovery features for example, it's possible to effectively reinstall Windows but leave data etc intact. Open up charms, choose settings and then Change PC settings. There's a Refresh PC option there and also a complete reinstall option, access to the install media is required to configure it for use. Also, to close "Notro" / TIFKAM apps, grab the menu bar by left clicking and drag it to the bottom of the screen. The app will actually be closed rather than hiding in the background. Edit: Also forgot to add, there's (finally) native ISO mounting support. Simply double-clicking an ISO image will mount it, right clicking it in Computer gives the option to dismount.
