Looking for a way to force a logoff or a restart after a set period of idle (XP Pro). We have several XP Pro boxes that are used by rotating employees or by many employees. They will do their email or work or whatever and get up and walk away or leave. The next person that sits at that machine is faced with a locked workstation. The only way they can login is by performing a hard power off and restart. Looking to avoid this. Any ideas?

There are a couple of different ways you can manage this with Group Policy. There are a couple of settings in the administrative templates. User Settings|Administrative Templates|Control Panel|Display. One of the articles referenced has some pretty good detail on managing this process through the registry. You can deploy registry values using scripts or to leverage Group Policy fully you can check out MS's free Registry Extension.

I didnt read those articles but what you could do is make a batch file that says

 Shutdown -L -c "text"

and then name the batch file "whatever.scr"
After that i beleive it is the "%localDisk%/system" that you have to drop it in and the windows should automatically find it. Oh and "text" would be whatever you want it to say when the logoff event popsup.

I tested it...

It doesn't appear to work, see the image.

It would have been nice if it was that simple.

I had already tried this and also got the error stating it isn't a win32 application.

Thanks for the tip on Winexit.scr. Have tested it an works great. Also am using a HKEY setting to hide the screensaver tab on the display properties so it won't be changed by the user...
