Default Exchange 2007 Global address list

Hi Guys, i am new to exchange.

We installed Exchange 2007, and added a lot of users,
how long till it sync and updates the clients with the new users on thier address book, for example i added a new user, i can't see him, unless i reconfigure user's mailbox on thier local machines.

I believe the GAL is always up to date (could be proved wrong here).
I'm going to guess your users are using Outlook in cached mode therefore the Offline Address Book "OAB" is what they will be using. This updates at 5am (unless you changed it) and then Outlook will update its copy, I belive, upto 8 hours after it logs in.
You can force the OAB to regen and then force the clients to update their copy if you want to test. OWA always shows the current GAL therefore when you make changes I would check that to make sure you are happy.

1) Where do i see that the update is at 5am on the server settings perhaps i wanted to change it ?
2) also, how can i create an application account, for example a global account of few users, it still need a user on AD? every mailbox needs an account on AD ?

Thanks a lot, more questions coming

The OAL generator runs at 5AM by default and you can change it on the properties of the OAL in ESM (using Exchange 2003 speak). You can force Outlook to update the GAL/OAL in the Send/Recieve settings and also (I believe) by exiting Outlook. Yes, every mailbox requires a user account as a mailbox is an attribute of a mailbox enabled user account.

1.
Microsoft Exchange, Organisation Configuration, Mailbox, Offline Address Book, Properties of Default Offline Address List and then the schedule bit.

2.
Each mailbox needs an AD account but it probably depends on what you mean by application account, what are you requirements?

no probs!

EDIT: Need to type faster!

an account for a few users, shared account like support or helpdesk for example, still needs a user on AD i guess

also, why do you need ISA for Exchange ? some1 recommended buying ISA server and two certificates, 1 for internal one for external host name.

Anyone here using Exchange 2007 to help ?

While you may be tempted to change the time for the OAB generation, it isn't something I would actually recommend that you do.

The most I would change it to is to update three times a day, any more often is close to useless as you cannot change when the clients will get the updated file. It can also have a performance hit on the server.

Remember that Outlook only downloads updated OAB files once every 24 hours or when Outlook is restarted automatically. That behaviour cannot be changed. Users can also opt to download the file manually using the send/receive menu.

An ISA server in front of Exchange is Microsoft's preferred solution. Usually the ISA server would go in the perimeter network, ensuring that the Exchange servers are not connecting to the internet directly. However there is nothing wrong in my opinion with exposing an Exchange server directly to the internet, if the usuall security best practises are followed.

Simon.

Can you see them in OWA?
If not try forcing the OAB to regenerate and check the event logs.
