Same here, SEP MR3 did not resolve the issues on our 64bit Standard 2008 Server. Given up for now and bought AVG 8.0 Server Edition.

On my network this ugly situation showed up only after an old Access 2.0 based program and Office 2000 files were moved over to a Win 2008 server; everything was running fine until then. After the move, I resided in hell for a couple of weeks. I initially discounted SMB signing issue as the entire network was affected; symptoms were unlike the affects of having SMB enabled on the older OS versions and many more programs and system changes were added within a short time, along with the Access 2 and Office 2000 files.
On my client's network, I have Symantec 10.2 (no evil spawned Endpoint for me); I did remove Symantec completely at one point including all registry entries by Symantec, which had no affect after rebooting. Symantec is terrible with leaving it's body parts behind after an uninstalll , so I assume this is why some users are having issues even after a uninstalling/reinstall . Once SMB signing was disabled, the network completely stabilized, super fast, no network issues in >3 months. On a Win 2008 Terminal server, accessing Office 2000 Excel and Access files from another Win 2008 server, I did run into extremely slow opening and saving of files (3 minutes for even tiny files). After Disabling SMB2 in the registry of the 2008 server holding the data, the same files were opening instantly. Disabling SMB 2.0 was only necessary on the one server holding the data. Neither I or any of the users noticed any speed decrease in programs/data which could benefit from SMB2 from that server. Nasty of MicroSoft to leave this issue for us. Lastly, as to Symantec.. Used the corporate versions for years. Only had an issue approx once a year. Now it seems every month the kiddy programmers screw something else up. This month the license programm now does not give back licenses when Symantec is uninstalled or a machine is rebuilt. 50 user license, 41 machines, and it tells me I have no licenses left. Symantec will not have a customer base in the near future... reminds me of the Novell management team, who were to busy playing golf, preceding to give it's major network market share to Microsoft. I know no one has been in this thread since October. Do we know if Symantec has resolved the issue.

No, they have not. Within the past 3 weeks we have migrated a new client to two new 2008 x64 servers, and are having the same problem with the latest version of SAVCE available for download. The server is strictly a file server, and like most others on here, it is a PowerEdge 2950 with dual Broadcom 5708 NICs. I haven't seen anyone else mention this, but I have the NICs configured as a SLB team. I made sure that I'm using the latest drivers directly from Broadcom and the latest version of BACS.
For now I have disabled the Symantec services in hopes that that will fix it, and tomorrow night will be uninstalling it completely. The Symantec primary server is an old 2003 server so the clients will still be updated and managed at least. |

Wow ok it is sad. I have basically turned off real time scan but will go in and disable the services. This is really sad. No I am looking at the free version of AVG. I am not sure if it will run or not on it. Honestly it will be the only server in our infrastructure that will have it installed. I upgraded our entire infrastructure to 2008, and Exchange 2007, only to be nailed on this one server with complete lock up. Like many I can RDP to it no problem. Nothing in the logs to say it is Symantec. Only SMB connections lock up then 10 minutes later it is normal again. Of course a reboot gets me another week but I can bounce our primary file server every 7 days! that is just rediculious..
I don't have funds right now to move to a new platform. Any basic freeware ie AVG software ideas would be much apreciated. |

For server virus protection I don't think that AVG Free will even install, never mind work. You could do worse than buy Trend; our people swear by it.

I will check out the update. I am so mifed at them I might just install Kaperski out of spite. I am on file connect now and there is MR4 available. My hope is this fixes it. this is the last time I want to see this issue. If it doesn't work this time I a dumping it entirely.

The update fixed the issue for approx 3 weeks, the longest ever.... and then on 24th Dec we had two incidents within the one day. No idea what caused the shares to stop responding. From what others have posted here, seems like removing Symantec and installing a different anti-virus product is the only medium term solution.

I am going to install Kaspersky Labs Anti Virus only for my file servers. At least I know they will be ok. For the desktops Symantec seems to be ok but that really added a ton of junk and all I want is anti virus for servers.
