Anyone know how to NOT make a backup of the old system and how to FORCE SP1 NOT to allow you to uninstall it? It seems that this "feature" will rob us of a lot of disk space, and I'm looking for a method of reclaiming it back.

EDITED:

I guess it cannot be done. This is a built in "feature" set by Microsoft.

When installing SP1 on a server that has WINS service installed, a prompt asking you if it's ok to stop WINS is displayed during the installation of SP1.

Does anyone know how to disable this prompt?

Cmd line switch "/N" (no backup no uninstall)

I've installed the update on 8 machines now with varying configuration and roles and have no seen this behavior. I did encounter it being unable to backup atapi.sys but you can skip it. /Passive or /Quiet might be the solution to this, no way to find out though unless someone tries it.

Extract the installer (it does this by itself normally) to a folder. From this folder browse to i386\update. You can use cmd line switches with update.exe.

Thanks Ahinson.

Another note on installing Exchange 2003 on an SP1 machine - an error pops out (see attached image) however you can still install Ex2003. Now lets see if it works...

I read somewhere that Exchange has issues with SP1 when it hasn't been installed in the default location (i.e %program files%\exchsrvr)

Daniel,

Whenever you update windows or install service pack, it will back them up as $NTUninstallKBxxxxx or $NTServicePackUninstall folders under C:\Windows\. It is SAFE to delete them all without any hesitating . I've been doing it for years with my servers and workstations. After the 13th of each month, I have the VBScript run to check on all of the workstations to delete those. So if you forgot to use /n as Andrew has pointed out, you could shift-delete it and defrag .

Here's the screenshot that I got from my friend's WINS server. You can see the whole bunch of ugly $NTUninstallxxxxx . After I finish the installation, they'll be gone. And it also stopped me for the WINS question. I don't really care to find a solution to disable that pop-up because I only have two WINS servers and practically in any company there would be no more than 2.

Last thing, I used autostreamer to slipstream SP1. It only took me 10 secconds to set it up and the tool 5 mins to produce the .iso. That tool makes me happy and lazy . I already tested the new 2k3-SP1.iso installation as well. It works perfectly. SP1 shows up.

Take care
