Hello everyone

We have a company with a 2003 Server R2 acting like a DHCP, DNS, Domain Controller and File Server, with about ten PCs connected with My Documents Redirection configured. The server domain name is setup with a real name (company.com)

The company recently bought a new branch office and they want to setup a new server there. The branch office is not in the same building, so we dont have physical connection between the two servers.

Both buildings have an ADSL connection with static public IPs.

We need proposals for the setup between the 2 offices.

Site-to-Site VPN's (some products call it LAN-to-LAN) is IMHO the way to go.

I dont quite understand how the AD objects of the main office will replicate to the branch.

With a Site-to-Site connection it looks like you have a physical connection but over the internet.

But what do you want to know.
Because I can cover a lot like how replication should occur, how you should configure sites, how to configure a site-to-site (what are you using as firewalls? ISA?) but you don't tell a lot, so I can't explain a lot.

Well here is the info:

We have only one server (2003 R2). We dont have a dedicated firewall device, and we dont have ISA. We rely on the router's builtin firewall at the moment.

We are thinking of two solutions.

1. Buying the SBS 2008 (for use of the Exchange) for the main office and move the 2003 on the branch.

2. Buying a second 2003 for the remote office.

We will build the Site2Site connection, but we dont want to rely on the Internet for the functionality of the domain.

Sounds like you might want a 2nd DC with exchange or a 2nd DC and an exchange server. SBS is standalone.

No, I dont want the second DC to be an Exchange. The Exchange will be the SBS box. All I wanted to know is if the 2003 R2 (not SBS) can become additional DC to the SBS 2008 box.

Yes, Server 2003 R2 can be an additional DC but SBS has to be the top dog.
