Unhappy Users' difficulty for the using of Exchange 2003 and Vpop3 external mail server

Hi,

we have one exchange 2003 server(for local office mail) on Server2003
enterpirce SP2. Another, we have Vpop3 mail server to download mail
from our ISP.
Please note: our local domain name and the internet domain name from mail ISP is NOT the same.

Our users' use outlook 2003

Some users has permitted to use external mail account from ISP and
some has not.

In this case,

1. users, who has both exchange(local) and external mail, are switch
between the "From account", to send mail Exchange(local) or external.

If sometime, they forget to choose the external mail account to send
to the external receipt, the mail may going out but the Receipts can't
reply to that user.

Sometime, they use external account to send the local exchange
receipt, the mail is going out. This is the problem No1.

@@@@@@
Please advise us how can we configure Exchnage, Vpop3 and users' Outlook
setting, without switching the "From Account". (the way user can use
both accounts with some setting without switching.)

*********************************************

2. Sometime, they need to send a mail to both external and
exchange(local) receipts, but the users can not send one time. At
those cases they send two times, one for external and one for
exchange(local) users. How difficult.

@@@@@
Please advise us how can we configure the exchange, vpop3 and users' Outlook
setting for single mail to both local and external receipt.

Please note: we ignore the smart host setting, and leave it blank in
exchange SMTP server properties.

*********************************************

Thank you all and waiting for your valued reply

Victor

Key question:
Why are you using two sets of accounts?
From the dim, distant past, the best way to use VPOP3 is to download all mail and pass it to Exchange. All users have their public email address in Exchange and email is routed to the correct mailbox. Sending is to Exchange (again, correct internal routing) with external email either direct or via ISP smarthost

Hi Ossian,

Thank for your kind support.

Our local FQ Daomain name is dirrerent form the registered domain name to ISP. And we don't get a Public IP for that domain.

If we may change to our local FQ Domain name, is there any proble for outgoing and incoming connection?

We're less experience to do as per your suggestion, please kindly provide us the required step by step configuration for that (some links or documents).

Thank so much
Victor.

Exchange has no issues with multiple email domains (check the parent site for more info)
Check the VPOP documentation for routing all incoming email to Exchange

Nothing you have posted provides a reason to use external accounts. The only reason I can see is that you are not aware of what Exchange is capable of doing.

To put it simply, there is no reason to be using external accounts, mixing Exchange and POP3. That simply causes a mess. Outlook is primarily an Exchange client, and will want to use Exchange for everything.

Your AD domain is completely unrelated to the SMTP domain. They can be different. If SBS Server is setup as per the wizards and not changing anything, then it uses a .local domain. No problems there.

Lack of static IP address? Not a problem. As long as the ISP has port 25 open then you can run Exchange as it was designed - SMTP delivery - and ditch the POP3 accounts.

In my opinion, POP3 has no place in a corporate environment.

Simon.
