Default vcenter server 5

Hi ,

As for testing purpose i just install a VMWare ESXi 5 , and install vmware vspehere client in my system . Now i am able to connect remotly to my esxi server. Now do i must have to install vmware vcenter 5 server to create a site , folders and virtual machines ...I try to create a site directly but i am unable to find the option in it.

Also if i must have to install vcenter 5 , then can i install it in my windows xp system and can connect it to my esxi server and start creating the site..or i must have to install windows server 2008 and then only i can install it.

Thanks...

A site? What's a site? Or do you mean a datacenter or cluster?
When you use the vSphere client, you can directly manage the host and it's virtual machines...

But when using vCenter Server you can create datacenters, clusters, make use of HA, DRS etcetc.

For Datacenters and such you gonna need vCenter.

You can run vSphere Client, and manage your ESXi hosts.

With this you can create VMs and work with your ESXi environment. You can also create Pools.

For using VMware cluster(HA, DRS), vDSwitch, or even a VMware DataCenter etc., you need to have a vCenter installed(you can create one VM and install the vCenter inside)

You can donwload and use the vCenter v5 for trial for 30 days.

Hope this can help.

Hi ,

yes , that is fine but if we install a vCenter on other system will it be able to connect my esxi server directly as same as vspehere client ? Because if i install a vcenter on any virtual machine inside the esxi server and then install a vcenter , it will not directly talk with my esxi server hardware and rather it will create a load on my that virtual server..so i must have to plan the storage capacity ( e.g if i have to create a 5 servers with 40gb hdd space using a vcenter then i must have to first make a virtual system of about 250gb space )

Thanks ...

You can install the vCenter on a physical machine and as long as the physical machine can reach the ESXi you will be able to connect to the ESXi.

vCenter OS requirement:
1. Win 2008 R2
2. win 2008 64 bit

Once you installed to vCenter, you can connect via vSphere client to the vCenter server and then add Data Center and Hosts
