Hi, we have a Windows Server 2003 Forest Fuctioning Level with a root.dir and a child domain bcferries.corp. This archictecture was built many years ago. We never use (or have no real need for) the root.dir for anything and I'm wondering if its even possible to turn the child domain to become the root domain by promoting the child domain to root perhaps? Not sure... any wisdom would be appreciated. See pic attached for a idea of the setup. The goal is to lose the root.dir. Thanks!

Also, another one of our goals is to uplift this forest to 2008 R2 so I'm hoping theres a tool that might amalgamate the two domains. Thanks

They don't appear to be child domains.
A child domain would've been child.root.dir for instance.
Just run the ADTD tool first to see what you got. http://www.microsoft.com/download/en...n&=tm&id=13380

Those look like peer root domains, not parent-child domains. At any rate, they can't be consolidated or merged and you can't remove the root domain or elevate the other domain to become the root domain of the forest.

It was probably set up like this because Microsoft used to recommend (which they no longer do) that you create an empty root domain when creating your forest-domain structure.
