Default Recovering password without a floppy or cd drive

Dear forum,

I have a former work laptop running xp pro that I would like to get administrator privledges for (currently I cannot load programs and change certain settings without logging in as the administrator). The computer does not have a floppy or cd drive however. Is there a way to use any of the methods you suggested without such a drive? (I noticed there was a similar sample question in Dan's read first comments but I did not see a response). Also, I have tried to email loginrecovery.com but the message is returned with a delivery failure message making me wonder if they are still opertating. The machine does have USB ports available. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks,
bunit

Can you set the BIOS to allow you to boot from the USB port?

USB boot is enabled (for USB diskette or CD-ROM).

Ok, then that is how you do it. You can either use a bootable floppy, a bootable CD or a bootable USB key/stick/pen drive and try yhr following. http://www.petri.co.il/forums/showthread.php?t=2438

I don't have a floppy or cd drive and the instructions for Dan's recommended choice of www.loginrecovery.com does not have instructions for using a USB flash drive. The loginrecovery website looks for the a: drive to download a floppy based solution (which I don't have). The cd based solution downloads a file which you can use to burn an ISO file on a CD. I've tried copying the cd ISO file to my flash drive (and having BIOS look to removeable devices first when booting) but the computer doesn't seem to look to/read the flash drive.

Any ideas besides buying a USB floppy drive?

Do you know how to make your flash drive (I assume this is your USB storage device) bootable?
