In Windows XP you can rename many files at once by using Windows Explorer:
-
Select all files in a folder.
-
Right click and choose Rename. You can also press F2 to rename the file.
-
Enter the new name for one of the files.
-
See how all files were renamed.
All the other files will be renamed to that name, with individual numbers in brackets to distinguish them.
Caution: Renaming files by using this method is ok if you want all the files to have exactly the SAME name. But if you have many files with different names and you simply wish to add a character to them do not use this method.
For example, if you have 100 files with the name of
pic001.jpg
pic002.jpg
etc.
and you want them to be renamed into
pic001_vacation.jpg
pic002_vacation.jpg
etc.
DO NOT USE THIS METHOD!!! If you do the files will be renamed into
pic001_vacation.jpg
pic001_vacation (1).jpg
pic001_vacation (2).jpg
etc.
Which is not the desired result.
